Exploring Canal Ring

Amsterdam's world famous Canal Ring was constructed more than four centuries ago to attract the city's most prosperous home owners. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage site directly south of the city centre remains one of Amsterdam's most affluent neighbourhoods. Many of the elegant homes along this canal loop shaped like a horseshoe have been converted into some of the city's most interesting hotels. The Hotel Pulitzer alone was created from 25 different canal houses from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Accommodation near Canal Ring

Literary buffs may prefer to browse the several signed books inside the library at the four-star Ambassade Hotel, but the Canal Ring is also home to Amsterdam's first boutique hostel, Cocomama. However, regardless of where visitors choose to spend their nights, the Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein's vibrant nightlife, the floating Flower Market, and the Skinny Bridge along the Amstel waterway are never far away.

Sightseeing near Canal Ring

Not only is Amsterdam's Canal Ring conveniently located immediately south of the city's old centre, but there is also plenty to explore within this unique neighbourhood's own boundaries. The Kattenkabinet and Anne Frank House are just two of the many museums located within converted Canal Ring Houses.

- Anne Frank House

Few Amsterdam experiences are as emotional as a visit to the Prinsengracht building where Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazis from 1942 to 1944. The rooms remain much as they were during Anne's stay, and Anne's original diary is just one of the exhibits on permanent display. Early evening visits or reserving tickets in advance on the official website are the best ways to avoid long queues.

- Kattenkabinet

The man who first opened this unusual 'cat cabinet' art museum after the death of his favourite feline still lives in this beautifully restored canal home. The owner lives on the second floor, while the first floor is open to the public and filled with cat-related works of art from the likes of Rembrandt, Picasso, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Two live cats prowl among the paintings and sculptures.

- Westerkerk

It took over a decade to build this Renaissance–style church, the world's largest Protestant house of worship until the 1675 construction of London's St Paul's Cathedral. A replica of Habsburg emperor Maximilian I's crown stands on top of the Westerkerk's 85m tower, the tallest in all of Amsterdam and open for climbing between April and October. Although the Westerkerk's famous organ and carillon is usually played automatically each quarter hour, an authentic carillonneur does the honours between noon and 13:00 each Tuesday.

Transportation near Canal Ring

Aside from walking or cycling, trams are the Canal Loop's most popular public transportation. More than a dozen tram lines travel between the Canal Loop and various other Amsterdam areas. Passengers who travel aboard the four Canal Bus lines, complete with multilingual commentary, can purchase combination tickets which can be used for admission to the Van Gogh Museum. Visitors who prefer boat travel can buy Heritage Museums Canal Tickets valid for canal travel and admission to five Canal Loop museums.
