Nuuanu Avenue highlights
Art and culture abound on Nuuanu Avenue. Those who are into live performances will want to catch what’s on stage at the Hawaii Theatre Centre, which has provided entertainment from live music to theatre and more since 1922. It is called the Pride of the Pacific for a good reason.
Nature lovers will also find tranquil escapes around Nuuanu Avenue, including the nearby Foster Botanical Garden with lush green spaces and tropical plants in the middle of city centre Honolulu. Equally picturesque is Liliʻuokalani Botanical Garden, the former property and picnic grounds of Queen Liliʻuokalani. Here, visitors will encounter native Hawaiian plants.
Good to know when visiting Nuuanu Avenue
One Nuuanu Avenue tradition not to miss is its First Friday art night. It’s the perfect time to check out what’s on view at the art galleries, which stay open until 9 pm. Afterwards, most people head out to one of the many bars. For those who prefer a serene scene during the week, head to Tea at 1024, recognised by Honolulu Magazine as a top teahouse.
Another art spot on Nuuanu Avenue is the City centre Art Centre, a bright and inviting gallery and workshop that regularly hosts events and exhibits, such as the recent Hawaii Watercolour Society Show, featuring exquisite paintings on paper and more.
