Disappointing, disappointing...
Very disappointed.
One of the reasons we picked the hotel is because it has a hot spring bath.
But the bath is so worn out that the hot spring was luke warm, with leaves resting on the bottom....A clear sign of negligence.
Almost all onsen hotels will let guests who stays there with two meals use the hot spring free of charge.
But not this one. We were asked to pay for use of onsen but we refused.
Luckily there is Google Translate and I won the argument.
Even more terrifying is the antique hot water pot which the interior protective coatings had peeled off....a cancer accusing risk.
There is no shop noe restaurant in the area as it is about an hour driven from Takamaya City.
You better bring plenty of fruit and vegetables if they are part of your diet.

Great experience staying in a traditional tatami room with low tables and futons on the floor. The traditional breakfast and dinner were a fabulous experience. The onsen was lovely, bathing in hot water looking at the snow covered mountains we used the public one but on both occasions had it to ourselves.

Excellent Stay in a Ryokan up in the Hills
It was a last minute decision (1 month before our trip) when we made the booking as we wanted to try something different and to stay in a traditional Japanese hotel with onsen.
Turn out to be a real treat and quite frankly a warm memory.
The place is quite well maintained, our room was spacious and comfortable. We had unlimited use of the onsen which had both indoor and outdoor facilities - you can see the mountains. Food will be difficult to obtain outside since the location is quite remote. Nevertheless we ordered a dinner set meal which consists of hida beef and was serve right to us in our room.
Service was very nice from all the hotel staffs right from the doorstep, eventhough English was spoken in minimum but they managed to make us feel welcomed.
Matsunoi Hotel is situated away from all the hustle and bustle of the city and if you need a place a relax and unwind, it comes highly recommended.

The hotel is a bit remote. It is difficult to communicate with the owner. I have sent a few emails but never received any reply.

Wonderful Ryokan in the mountains near Takayama
We had a wonderful time at Hina no Yakata Matsunoi. The hotel was charming, the meals served in our room were some of the best that we ate while in Japan, and the hot springs downstairs were delightful. The best part of our stay was our waiter Di. He was funny, and charming. We looked forward to seeing him everyday. Especially when he gave us our daily Japanese "lesson".

A lovely stay.
Very nice stay. We had some difficulty communicating, but the staff tried everything he could to answer our questions. One thing is that the place closes for business at 11:00, and you're expected to leave the premises around 11:00am the latest.

Highly recommended for food and nature lovers
Our stay at this hotel was definitely one of the highlights of our Japan holidays. The hotel managers did everything to make our family have an extraordinary time at the hotel. The food is outstanding and even our 6 and 11 years old children loved it. If you are looking for a lovely Onsen-Hotel in a remote location this is perfect, don't expect to find any 7/11 or other convenient stores in any foot distance, but nevertheless you can reach the hotel by public transport. As the bus only serves the bus stop right in front of the hotel every 2 hours, the manager picked us up at the closest bus stop one evening even without us asking for it. He was just standing there with the van waiting for us! Amazing.
While communication in English is not straight forward, we were able to organize everything without problems (one of the very friendly staff speaks English and even some French). We can strongly recommend this hotel to anyone who is ready to be out in the nature, soaking in a hot spring after dinner and has a passion for truly Japanese food.

The staff were very helpful and friendly, food was delicious😊
The staff are polite and cheerful. They introduce their room and point-to-note to us patiently. They have separate hot spring. Both the changing room and the hot spring are clean and tidy.
