Quaint. LOTS of stairs. No hot food due to ownership changing soon. Hope the new owners keep the sweet staff.

Give this place a miss
Terrible place. Rooms are well past their shelf life, bed is very small and mattress worn out. Sights out side advertise “food served all day at weekends” Not true pub closed at 2.30pm on Sunday so no restaurant in the evening and breakfast is orange juice and a piece of toast. Think Fawlty towers . Don’t stay here not worth the money.

Tired and dated but fairly clean
The room was fairly clean but the bathroom was looking very tired and dated (30+ year old champagne coloured suite). The TV was too small to watch and was very high up and far away from the bed. After a 4 hour drive, I was looking forward to relaxing with a cuppa and some Saturday night to before bed! I tried contacting the hotel twice through Hotels.com in the weeks prior to my stay but they never replied. I emailed them directly to ask about dietary requirements and I was told to ring and speak to the chef. Check-in was easy and straight forward. When I went downstairs for breakfast in the morning, I said good morning to the lady on duty, but all she said to me was “How did you get in here?” then she hurried off to check the door was locked (I was 5 mins early for breakfast and came in through an open fire door). She did come back to explain herself and took my breakfast order. Apart from the young girl who took me to my room when I checked in, not once did a member of staff greet me politely or smile. I was not made to feel welcome.

This place deserves more than an excellent rating if that were possible. The rooms, the food , the welcome, we had such a laugh with the head bar lady/waitress and the young blond girl! We were a party of 6 and a dog, and stayed 2 nights. Nothing was to much bother. Would return definitely. If I have to find a fault get new pillows in all rooms, very hard, flat and lumpy.

Excellent night's stay
Arrived in time for an evening meal and the Wiltshire beef pie was excellent. Room very clean and bed extremely comfortable. Friendly staff and good breakfast. TV in room seemed reluctant to work but I wasn't over-bothered by that!

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The basic cleanliness of bathroom and bedding were good. However, there were cobwebs on the ceiling, and the windows into the room were covered in spider webs! The food was good, but I became extremely ill with what appeared to be food poisoning on my second night.

Dog lovers paradise, AND just all round great.
Whether or not you're a dog lover, this is a fabulous old pub/hotel with delightful staff, great food, lovely rooms and a bath even in the only single room. I'm actively looking for more customers in the area just so I can stay there again.,

Lovely staff. Good food. Bring your earplugs.
We stopped off for one night on our way to catch the ferry from Plymouth. The room was a reasonable size. Clean and comfortable. The downside was traffic noise. We were at the front and the hotel is directly on to the main road with lots of heavy commercial traffic. Even with double glazing it was noisy but fortunately this did ease off in the evening. All of the staff were very welcoming and more than helpful. The pub is open all afternoon which was handy for a late lunch when we arrived. None of the noise from the bar could be heard upstairs. The weather was awful so we didn't venture out and ate in the pub in the evening. Excellent food and very good value. We'd recommend for the warmth of the welcome and the restaurant but maybe ask for a room at the back if you're a light sleeper.

A Very Pleasant Overnight Stop
The hotel was very friendly and the breakfast was excellent. the food at dinner was very ordinary and did not warrant the hotel's four star rating. Nothing to really grumble about except that I thought that the room charge was a bit steep for what it was.

Ideal location for a relaxing break
We enjoyed a relaxing and rare 2 day break (we have a small farm and holidays don't happen often) in the Shaftesbury area. We chose the Grove Arms because it looked perfect for us and we were not disappointed. The bedroom was cosy, the staff were lovely and friendly, the building was attractive and clean and the food was excellent. The villlage wa also ideally placed for our 2 days of exploring. Everything was perfect for our stay and very relaxed.
