We arrived in Santorini on the afternoon of 21 May 2019.
Our first comment is that guests planning to self-cater would be well advised to pick up their provisions from one of the large supermarkets with its own parking before heading out to Oia where we found only small local ‘supermarkets’ and where parking outside is virtually impossible. There is a Lidl near the airport, helpfully marked on the map handed out by the Sixt car hire desk, and just along the road from Lidl there’s a local large, modern, very well stocked, competitively priced supermarket with a good deli counter, an excellent coffee stand and lovely staff.
We had been unable to find any detailed directions to the villa before leaving home but had been invited to ring the owner, George, in a confirmatory e-mail. After searching, fruitlessly, for some time, we made the call and he kindly came out in his car so that we could follow him. We would never have found the villa on our own, it is some distance out of Oia town, almost by the beach and off the road down an unmade road, then up a very narrow stretch of driveway which then leads into the villa’s own driveway. We would also recommend taking the coastal road from the airport which is an easy 15 minutes drive and seldom busy, rather than the route our satnav mapped. That takes you out of the airport and into Thera then along the cliff road to Oia through busy towns with parked cars and pedestrians competing for driving space on the narrow streets.
