The Internet did not work when I first arrived. It took a while to get that to work. The staff would not answer the phone at the front desk when I tried to call down. The breakfast was fairly bad with very few choices. Many of the doors did not work or were jammed open. Rain continually spilled onto the tile on the elevator and was very slippery. It was very difficult to communicate with staff could not speak English.

Service level needs to be improved
For a hotel or this level and price there's a lot of potential re service level to be improved. - Staff at the front desk hardly speaks English - Although they know that the wifi is not working it's not being fixed, even after 3 days - No information about near by attractions or proper local map available

The hotel looks fantastic, but the front desk help was not so good, nor was the Asian breakfast. Rooms were large, but the shower did not have a divider from the rest of the bathroom. Location was a bit far from the central area, but was walkable

Few issues but overall good hotel
Rooms were large and clean and overall it was a nice stay. Staff did not speak much English, and were not overly helpful. Location was good. A few issues with the room at first with fridge and wifi not working, but we were moved to another room.

Hotel was a real palace...
Unique experience living in a palatial setting. Rooms have seen better days, but the majestic views make up for it. Staff very polite and accommodating. Sufficient buffet breakfast with three types of fresh fruit and great tasting Asian food. The bar on the top floor has the best panoramic view in Pakse!

Grand, but faded hotel with good breakfast
A slightly faded hotel, trading on its former glories. The rooms were big and my bed was comfortable but everything felt dated. The bathroom was quite small and the water pressure very low, so washing my hair took a long time. The buffet breakfast was good and the staff were all attentive and pleasant. The 'fitness area' though is basically one room of broken, rusting and filthy machines from the 1980s. Utterly, utterly unusable.

Brokedown palace
If there are other options, take them. There are a number of smaller boutique hotels in Pakse. This beautiful building is only pretty on the outside.

Faded Glory - but a must see.
This is a fabulous looking True Palace converted to a Hotel. Its a must see in Pakse. Its unfortunate the Lao people do not have the funds to maintain it to the level it deserves. Our room on the Third floor was huge, and comfortable, but showing the restrictions on maintenance. The views from the open verandahs are amazing. The hotel advertises at the front door and in the elevator the cocktail bar on the top floor, yet while its there it was never open in the 5 days we stayed. However its worth the visit to use the open area to see the 360 degree views amazing. The free breakfast was Ok but not extensive and after the second morning we used the Coffee Shop across the road. Some of the staff were good but overall the hotel does not get the idea of tourist service. I think this is more a Lao thing as tourism is still new for them.

You probably already live better than a king ;-)
All in all I am glad that I stayed here just to try it. We stayed in one of the suites that probably housed one of the king's wives. The room was spacious and looked regal upon entry, with the biggest balcony I have ever seen in a hotel and a fantastic view of the entire city. It is easy to see why the king chose this spot to build the palace. The bathroom was huge with a fantastic tub and separate shower. However, looks can be deceiving. The glory days are sadly gone for this hotel with so many large newer places opening along the Mekong I think they just don't have the money to maintain the facility. I really appreciated the perspective that the place gives about how spoiled we are in our day to day lives compared to even royalty less than 100 years ago. The 2 biggest downfalls of the place are the tired mattress (as old as the palace itself? ;-) and there was only enough hot water in the room for 1 person to bathe... (which is a good excuse for bathing together ;-) I really wanted to give this place a glowing 5-star review and looked forward to staying there after 10 years of trying other Pakse hotels, but it gave me a sense of melancholy instead. The few remaining staff did try their best to make it a nice stay, but it is somewhat of a ghost hotel now... a huge palace with mostly empty rooms... you can feel the faded glory in every square meter of the building and riverside garden property.

We enjoyed our stay at the Palace, it's a magnificent building. Our room was huge, breakfast was good and staff were helpful. The location is good - close to the airport and restaurants. Good value for money

Historical and spacious hotel in Pakse
A large hotel in an old palace the rooms were very spacious with cable TV. The bathroom fittings were a bit dated. Breakfast was good, there is a buffet but you can also pre-order some dishes although ion the 2nd day they didn`t arrive and we had to reorder and almost didn't have time to eat before we left. The views are good. There is a bar with pool on the 6th floor. Staff are informative and helpful.

Disappointing.
I had high expectations for this place and found my stay to be mixed experience. Pros...large room, early check in, walking distance to town, great views of city and river. Cons...awful restaurant food, poor service. Room was scarce with furniture, noisy despite hotel practically being empty and rooms were dark even when doors and shutters open, limited hot water meaning having a bath or washing hair while showering was impossible. No sauna on site, it's actually a neighbouring business. Grounds poorly managed. Shop looked OK, but it was never open during my three day stay. Not worth the money, would suggest visiting the place, but stay elsewhere

The Prince of Darkness
Nestled atop a bucolic hill in the southern Laos panhandle, overlooking the mighty Mekong River and the sleepy town of Pakse, with cultivated rice paddies as far as you can see, is the majestic Champasak Palace Hotel. Commissioned by monarchy in the 1960s before the communist revolution, the impressive palace was designed for governance and to befit the sovereign needs of its ruler, the Prince of Champasak. Alas, due to a history of contemporaneous inevitability the regional ruler never got to use his new digs. Nonetheless this Champasak chateau has continued to oversee the Laotian landscape with majestic splendor for a half century. Today it is a three-and-a-half-star hotel that pops up online offering free breakfast and wifi for the intrepid internet-enabled traveler. And it is fabulous. Along with the Golden Buddha and the immense stone Buddha the Champasak Palace is a must-see for every Paske visitor. You have to ask yourself, when was the last time you stayed in a real palace for $30? My first-cousin-once-removed and I had two rooms, which pretty much commanded the entire fourth floor of the sprawling compound. One must, however, accept some of the little vagaries that come with hostelry conversion of a Laotian citadel. The staircase leading to the inviting but strangely uninhabited rooftop bar is pitch black and the walk from the rooms to the elevator is completely exposed to the elements. Perhaps most noticeable, however, is the outright absence of glass win

Old hotel in need of TLC
The hotel was amazing to look at, but terribly worn. Most of the staff did not understand English and were apathetic. The breakfast was non-existent if you went down after the bus loads of Chinese! However one or two staff at reception were extremely helpful in sorting.out our travel plans.
