The place was lovely. Service great. Have stayed in other B&B’s…missed having a formal gathering place.. Restaurant to away from the hominess of a B&B.

We had an amazing stay at this charming bed and breakfast. The owner, John, went above and beyond to ensure we had a wonderful experience, from preparing bicycles for us to offering fantastic local recommendations. The rooms were incredibly comfortable and spotless, and the location was perfect, allowing us to walk everywhere with ease. We definitely plan to return!

This is an attractive, updated 19th-C hotel with a fine dining restaurant downstairs. The staff is attentive, helpful, and cheerful. We stayed on the second floor in the Bronze room, which was well-appointed with a comfortable bed but had a tiny bathroom and shower that were a little difficult for my 6 ft. tall husband to move around in. The air-conditioning unit above the sink in the room leaked the first night we were there, but when we mentioned this to management, they had it repaired by the time we returned to change clothes for dinner. The hotel, like many in Cape May, does not have its own parking lot, so we were given tags so we could park in an area several blocks away. This was a little inconvenient, but since most of our stay was spent in town, not too much of a problem. The hotel is less than two blocks off the downtown mall, so very conveniently located.

The property was beautiful, clean, and very well maintained. The owners were very caring and helpful. Breakfast was delicious! The only inconvenience for us was the remote parking.

I loved the place but extremely disappointed about the parking. There is no parking. I came from out of town and had to park over a block a way with my 12 year old. Just was inconvenient.

B&B close to shopping and beach
The Hugh was excellent, overall. The owners were accommodating and very nice. The B&B was decorated beautifully and clean. The breakfast was delicious and offered eclectic options of sweet or savory. We also felt very safe, as you need to key in a code to enter the front door and your room. My only “complaint” was that the water in the shower wasn’t getting warm. Other than that, we completely recommend The Hugh.
Front sign and entrance.

Sweet option. Berry tart.

We made a 2-day trip from Atlantic City to Cape May after our 1/2 Iron Man, and it absolutely did not disappoint! We booked the Hugh right before going to Cape May, and it was one of the best choices we could have made! The B&B was sparkling clean and stylish. Even more, the owners were absolutely incredible! They made breakfast for us each morning, which was phenomenal by the way, and they gave us amazing recommendations for food. The owners opened a French restaurant right around the corner, and it was so amazing! You bring your own alcohol with no corkage fee, and they provide the best food. We are definitely going to come back, and if you have any thoughts on whether to book, do not look any further!

2/10 Poor

Difficult time checking in . Rang bell no one answered , went to back of property and owner Sandy seemed very annoyed my husband was back there ,not very welcoming and very rushed. I know It was a holiday weekend but interaction was very cold, the hot water took forever to get hot in shower, bath towels were tattered and no connection for television. Code to open door never worked we had to use our friends code who was also staying there.

6/10 Good

Good location in Cape May. Room was small and bathroom was essentially a tiny shower stall and toilet. No amenities. Toilet overflowed first day. Staff is somewhat unfriendly and seem bothered by any requests (althought literally everything is by request). They did buy us dinner one night to compensate for the plumbing situation, which was nice, however over they need some major hospitality training. Overall not much special.

6/10 Good

My husband and I booked the Ivory Room at the Hugh Boutique B&B for our 20th Anniversary. Overall it was disappointing experience and did not meet our expectations for the price. We have stayed in many charming inns but this wasn’t one of them. Firstly there is no parking at the inn. We were given a parking pass for a municipal lot “ an easy 4 minute walk” That may be true for younger people especially after a busy day but not for my husband and I who are in our 70’s. Secondly, our room was on the third floor which was an unexpected challenge. The room itself had little personality, it was all white with a tiny separate toilet and shower stall. The vanity was in the main bedroom. There was a small refrigerator but no complimentary bottled waters, would have been appreciated. When we asked the innkeeper for waters he said they had a water cooler. The Inn description advertised a “pillow menu” not sure what that is but there were 4 uncomfortable pillows on the bed. Lastly, we had a choice each day of 2 breakfast entries, an egg based dish or a sweet dish. These were served with yogurt, banana and blueberries each day. There were no potatoes or breakfast meat offered. It was also troubling that dogs were present in the kitchen and the innkeeper served the food with dog hair on his shirt. So all in all, no parking, innkeepers who did not make us feel welcomed or special especially when we told him it was our 20 anniversary made for a disappointment.

6/10 Good

The breakfast was very nice … But I’m not sure why the staff ( manager ) is so unfriendly and unwelcoming. Cold. We noticed this last year when they first opened , we happened to walk by and just wanted to peek inside . The lady practically scolded us. The owner ( male ) seems a bit friendlier. You’re paying a lot of money for a bedroom and bath, no parking , no services , nothing truly special. It is a beautiful building though. I just wish the owners were appreciative of their guests and responded to constructive feedback.

Disappointed
The hosts were very nice and accommodating. The B&B was not what I expected. The bathroom had no counter top to put your toiletries on just a small sink so I was walking back and forth from the bathroom to the bedroom for whatever I needed..,makeup, brush, blower etc. Also there was no parking on the premises so we had to walk about 5-6 blocks to the municipal parking lot which was ridiculous in the heat. And the last thing is that it was about 7 blocks to the beach and although they provide a wagon for your chairs etc it was still a far walk. The description was a little deceiving to me. For the price I paid for a weekend we were disappointed. Just being honest.
