Wanting to splurge, I found the Kinagawa Plaza Hotel. It seemed nice on the website and had most amenities, so we splurged. After arriving a bit early, the hotel was a ghost town and staff member at reception told us we had to wait til 3PM to check in, despite no one else being there. We lingered in the lobby long enough (5mins) to make them nervous and without us requesting it, checked us in, which was nice. Only to find out that the room we got was half the size of the one we reserved. It technically met the “suite” with outside bath requirement, but was half the size of the one we had thought we reserved and paid for. Staff at reception spoke almost no english so after some back and forth on Google translate, they agreed to exchange the room to the one pictured. Much more spacious than the first one, still pretty run down. Air conditioner was non-existent. It was only one night we stayed, which was tolerable, but not worth it. Disappointment was an understatement having stayed at the Conrad Tokyo the night before in an actual suite for about the same price I was charged at the Kinugawa Plaza. Just find a place to stay in actual Nikko, not 1 hour outside of it, with better reviews and bang for your buck.
