Cheap Areas to Stay in Seoul

Seoul offers both glitzy commercial hubs and awe-inspiring, picture-postcard Joseon palaces – and you don't need to be a diehard K-pop fan to appreciate the city's cultural charm. Affordable lodging is easy to find in Seoul. There's a plethora of hanok (traditional Korean home) guesthouses in the Jongno district, an ideal base for culture vultures because of its historic and political landmarks. Backpackers will find cheap accommodation in Hongdae, a hip neighborhood with eclectic museums, lively nightlife, and younger crowds. Itaewon's international culinary scene makes it a good choice for foodies, and its hostels range from basic to whimsical.

Cheap Hotels in Seoul

You'll find no-frills quarters at Myeong-Dong New Stay Inn, and this budget pick puts you in close proximity to Gyeongbokgung Palace and irresistible bargains at Dongdaemun Market. At the modest Nagwonjang Hotel in Jongno, plants and parquet floors in each room offer a welcome contrast to the sparse walls. There's also a rooftop terrace, and Jogyesa Temple, the center of Korean Buddhism, is nearby. The contemporary digs at E Seven Place Dongdaemun include sleek rooms and airy family suites, some of which offer excellent city views.

Where to find cheap food in Seoul

Sample Korean delicacies at Gwangjang Market, a sprawling street market where you can also get clothing, souvenirs, and textiles. Should you find yourself hankering for a midnight snack, seek out one of the many 24-hour BBQ restaurants in the capital. Korean BBQ and its accompanying spread of side dishes is an experience all on its own, and the casual joints will whet your appetite without burning a hole in your wallet. Tired from a day of bargain hunting? Duck into one of Seoul's themed cafés, quirky bakeries, and artisanal coffee shops.

Cheap Things to do in Seoul

After learning about the neighborhood's Joseon Dynasty ties at the Bukchon Traditional Culture Center, stroll amid the 900 or so traditional Korean houses in Bukchon Hanok Village. Leave plenty of time for exploring the grounds of the 15th-century Changdeokgung Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site and arguably Seoul's most exquisite Joseon palace complex. Shop to your heart's content in the Myeong-dong shopping district, haggle for souvenirs at traditional markets like Namdaemun and Gwangjang, or score unique finds at the weekly flea markets around the city. If you're into K-drama, don't miss the chance to recreate your favorite scenes in their actual filming locations. For example, the “love locks” on the 236-meter-tall N Seoul tower have been featured in several Koreanovelas, while the Gothic-style Choong Ang High School in Bukchon appeared in"Goblin." Alternatively, rent and wear a hanbok (traditional Korean attire) for a few hours. Not only does it make for great photos, but you'll also get into shrines and palaces for free.

Cheap Ways to Get Around Seoul

With 18 lines, Seoul's subway system can be confounding – it's one of the world's busiest transportation networks, after all – but it's the best way to move around the city. You'll get fare discounts with a reloadable T-Money card, which you can also use on buses and in some convenience stores. Public buses are color-coded; yellow buses are your best bet for getting to tourist spots, while green buses pass through neighborhoods and subway stations. Take note that the buses and bus stops don't always have English information, but you can get bus info at tourist information centers. Seoul Bike is a bike rental service available in select areas of the city.
