Geylang is a mainly Malay and Chinese area on Singapore’s east coast. On Joo Chiat and Katong Road, there are many scenic Peranakan (Straits Chinese) shophouses built in early 20th-century local and colonial designs.
As one of the original inhabitants of Singapore, the Malays have managed to keep their culture alive and vibrant. The area also hosts several famed local eateries, such as dim-sum outlets, food stalls, and restaurants offering exotic Asian cuisines. Katong, on the east coast, is particularly popular for authentic Peranakan dishes.
