Puerto Princesa is a great spot for nature lovers and those looking for beautiful tropical scenery to liven up their Instagram feed. The beaches certainly take some beating, with their nodding palms and white sands hitting all the right ‘desert island escape’ notes. But if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find breathtaking natural sights hidden out of sight.

The star attraction of Puerto Princesa is almost certainly its subterranean river, which has carved cathedral-like caverns out of the limestone rocks. If that sounds a little too claustrophobic to you, consider diving beneath the waves to explore the Tubbataha Reef. It’s a bit of a cruise away from the city, but worth it for the amazing marine life you’ll find.
