The Hotel Uzbekistan is an icon of Soviet-era Tashkent. While the lobby has been modernised, the rooms still feel straight out of the 1970s, and many corridors seem bizarrely abandoned. There’s nothing wrong with it as a hotel - just a little different to your average stay. Breakfast, service, cleanliness, facilities etc all good.

The hotel’s location is excellent, but the property itself isn’t very well maintained. The first room we were given had a leaking washbasin, a loose and shaky toilet seat, no water stopper for the bathtub, and, worst of all, no hot water when the temperature was –1°C. They moved us to another room the next day, which resolved the water and stopper issues, but the heater there was an old 51-year-old Soviet unit with a complicated operating method. The breakfast was fantastic and the staff were friendly, but overall, this is probably the worst 4-star hotel I’ve stayed in.

Very convenient location but that’s about the only positive thing about this hotel. Really needs a full refurbishment, AC doesn’t actually cools down the room, WiFi isn’t available in all the rooms, check-in and payment is very slow.
