Everything You Need to Know About Don Mueang

Don Mueang (or Don Muang) lies approximately 20 km north of downtown Bangkok, and is bounded by the Pathum Thani and Nonthaburi provinces. The district is best known for housing Don Mueang International Airport, with many hotels offering great value for overnight stopovers. The Don Muang area has many expressways, making it a convenient gateway to areas like Lad Phrao, Chatuchak and downtown Bangkok, as well as Rangsit in the north.

IMPACT Exhibition Center is within a 20-minute drive of Don Mueang International Airport. The multipurpose complex often hosts events ranging from international concerts to trade fairs and business conferences. Nearby is the satellite city of Muang Thong Thani, where you can find many businesses and affordable high-rise condominiums.

The Royal Thai Air Museum preserves planes and equipment spanning from the beginning of Thai aviation history to the present. Golfers can enjoy a round at the Kantarat Golf Course, which belongs to the Royal Thai Air Force, as well as the Rajpraek Club and the Royal Thai Army Golf Club.

The Central Lad Phrao mall lies around 13 km southwest of Don Mueang, while Future Park Rangsit is less than 15 km northeast of the airport. Chatuchak Park (next to the famous Weekend Market) and the adjoining Queen Sirikit Park are within a 20-minute drive from the district.

Shopping malls and department stores in the Don Mueang area offer plenty of fast food joints and franchise restaurants like MK, Zen and Oishi. Local restaurants, street food stands, and convenience stores are ubiquitous. Every hotel in the area has at least 1 onsite restaurant serving a broad selection of international cuisine.

Beyond what’s found in your hotel, nightlife in Don Mueang is limited to a few local karaoke venues and bars. Ratchadapisek Road is the district’s hotspot, with slick nightclubs and huge neon-lit massage parlors. Try downtown areas like Sukhumvit, Khao San Road, or Silom if you want livelier after-dark scenes in Bangkok.

Shopping malls in Don Mueang include the Big C Supermarkets, Tesco Lotus, and Central Department Store (on Ram Intra Road). There are more exciting shopping options just outside the district, such as Rangsit’s Future Park, Central Lad Phrao Mall, and the world-famous Chatuchak Weekend Market.

With expressways galore, the best way to get around Don Mueang is by car or taxi. The Mo Chit BTS Skytrain and Phahalyothin MRT Underground Stations are handy for trips to downtown Bangkok. A train station at Don Mueang International Airport connects you to Hualumphong Station in the center of town, near Chinatown Bangkok.
