Overall a great resort. It’s location makes it a good option to explore the island. The food at the buffet was fresh. The only minus is there is Only 1 à la carte restaurant on site. If you can have a réservation, the service is so quick you barely can chew your food. All the personnel was beyond perfect !!! Travelling with 4 kids from 7 to 15, its was a great resort.

The staff made you feel like you were family and that you were in their home. There wasn't one staff member that did not treat us in a kind manner going over and above with their level of service. From the food to how clean the rooms and the overall hotel was, it was a wonderful treat and vacation. I am definitely going back!!!

Great service, mediocre food/location

The service at this place was out of this world. We felt incredibly taken care of by the entire staff. The hotel is lovely and well maintained. The views are gorgeous however it is not on a beach, it is on a very boulder and rock laden waterfront so worth noting if beach access is important to your holiday. The food leaves a lot to be desired, and because of that I would not come again as a couple however would visit again with children as the all inclusive does make vacationing very easy. We took advantage of booking excursions through the front desk and ended up paying a lot less working with the hotel (bonus!) The excursions were wonderful.

We had a fabulous stay at the Hotel RIU in Madeira! Food The food was outstanding and plentiful. There was food for everyone, and a great selection for vegetarians and pescatarians. Salads, cheeses, gazpacho and other soups every night at supper, meats, fish, fresh fruit, desserts and ice cream. Great selection for kids/ picky eaters, too, including plain pastas and pizzas. Snacks available at Pepe’s Pool Bar usually included French fries, battered and fried zucchini/ eggplant/ cauliflower, and some meat options. One small suggestion: at Pepe’s, it would be great to have a dedicated serving spoon/ tongs for the non-meat food, so that us vegetarians don’t have to use, for example, the hot dog tongs to serve our vegetarian food. In general, it might be a good idea in the dining room to put the vegetarian options in its own section in order to avoid cross-contamination with the meat options. But this is very minor. Pina coladas (non-alcoholic and alcoholic) are delicious! The bartenders were generous with Irish cream on the rocks. Location Caniço is approximately 15-20 minutes from Funchal. It costs about 15 euros by Bolt (the Madeira equivalent of Uber or Lyft), or the RIU offers an included shuttle service. The shuttle to Funchal leaves at 9:30am/10:30am /11:30am. The shuttle returning to the hotel departs from Funchal at 3pm/4pm/5pm. Must reserve a spot on the shuttle 1-2 days in advance. An earlier departure option and later return option would be ideal.

This is an all-inclusive resort, which limits the breadth of drinks offered: there is only one brand of wine that I saw in the dining room, and the poolside bar had a laminated card with a limited number of simply made cocktails. Both the wine and cocktails were good, though. The Riu's app has bonkers areas. A link to the fine-dining room's menu goes to instructions on how to use your phone as a room key. Hitting the back button always took me away from the subject I was pursing to a chain-wide list of all Riu resorts. The room itself was fine, but a little greige for a high-end resort, and the air conditioning needed a boost. The staff were all very, very, very good. A shuttle bus into Funchal was a very good service. Would I return? Probably not. I'd want to stay in town, rather in an area equidistant between Funchal and the airport. And a little more variety in drinks.

Nous sommes arrivés assez tôt et même si notre chambre n’était pas prête, nous avons été invité à nous détendre autour d’un verre, et de manger un morceau. Nous avons également pu nous délester de nos bagages. Quelques minutes plus tard nous accédions à notre logement. Impeccable C’était la première fois chez Riu, mais certainement pas la dernière: nourriture et personnel au top. Massage en couple testé : un super moment. Un matin nous nous sommes levé tôt pour faire une rando, malgré qu’il n’était pas encore tout à fait 7:30, nous avons été autorisé à prendre le petit dej sans rien demander. Peut être de petites attentions anodines mais qui font beaucoup. Merci pour ces superbes vacances
