Kolding Hotels

Watched over by the 13th century, royal castle of Koldinghus, Kolding is a place of hair-raising history, seamless style, and arresting art. You’ll feel the creativity bubbling in your own veins, as you admire the majesty of a reaching fjord, before browsing through the wares of one of the town’s tiny, charming galleries - where you can watch artists at work, pouring their souls onto canvas before your eyes.

Things to see

The single tower of Koldinghus castle stands high above the town, and is packed to the brim with history - and, unusually, furniture. The castle’s interior serves as an exhibition space, and it hosts the smooth curves, and sleek style, of some prime examples of peerless Danish furniture design. The interior itself is also a work of art, featuring high ceilings illuminated by a constellation of lights, rustic red brick walls, and vast wooden pillars that splay out across the roof of its vast banqueting hall. The present castle had to be heavily restored, after being engulfed in flames during the Napoleonic Wars - when soldiers garrisoned inside lost control of the fires they were burning to stay warm. If the castle, and its exhibitions, don’t satisfy your taste for the sharpest Danish design, then the Trapholt Musuem is sure to have the cutting edge you’re looking for. You’ll see colourful chairs hanging from the ceiling, moody photographs of iconic pop stars, and abstract, outdoor sculptures, as you make your way around this typically contemporary and varied museum. After the sensory overload of art and design, sit back and admire Kolding Fjord from the cafe. You can nurse a freshly ground coffee, and work your way through some traditional Jutland cakes - like streif torte, buried below a mound of plump red berries. Globe trot in just a few hours, at the Geographical Gardens, where you’ll start in the neat lawns of an English garden, before travelling east to Japan, to breathe in the sweet pollen of clouds of pink cherry blossom.

Hotels in Kolding

A warm smile welcomes you to your choice of the hotels in Kolding - and simply walking around the lobby feels like a continuation of your visit to the great design museums. Chic interior design is offered without thought here, and you’ll feel like Danish royalty as you relax in a room of smooth lines, and deeply comfortable beds. End a long day with a swim in the tantalising pool, or by hitting the treadmills to work off any extra Danish pastries you’ve indulged in. With WiFi, flat-screen televisions, and tea and coffee making facilities waiting, you’ll always enjoy a friendly, faff-free stay in Kolding.

Where to stay

Kolding’s Old Town is a beautiful place to walk, and you’ll hear your footsteps rattling off of the cobbles, as lemon-yellow timber houses lean out over you. If you’re looking to stay somewhere a little different from the norm, then Christiansfeld is sure to catch your eye. Built by the Moravian Brethren, this town was fully planned out before a stone was laid - meaning it’s yet another masterpiece of Danish design. You’ll quickly understand why it has UNESCO World Heritage Site status, as you walk its beautiful, lime-tree laced boulevards. Don’t miss the sweet honey cakes on sale, either.

How to get to Kolding

Trains from Fredericia and Copenhagen let you reach Kolding’s artistic beauty in style. Or, you can drive across from Copenhagen in just 3 hours. By air, one of Denmark’s biggest airports, Billund, is only a 40-minute drive away. Its South Jutland location also means the town is relatively easy to reach from Germany, with the drive from Hamburg taking less than 3 hours.
