Hotels in Oregon
Hotels in Oregon like to make the most of its natural splendor. On the coast you’ll find clifftop inns commanding fantastic views over the ocean (and serving the freshest seafood). In the mountains are luxury lodges and spa retreats, where forested peaks frame the view from saunas and hot tubs. Even the stylish luxury hotels in Oregon’s cities can boast snow-clad mountains as a backdrop. Boutique hotels in Oregon’s hippest neighborhoods are known for their vibrant décor and “locavore” esthetic, while 5-star opulence can be enjoyed in the state’s historic neighborhoods.
Things to see in Oregon
Crater Lake National Park is the undoubted highlight of Oregon’s varied and spectacular landscape. The waters of this deep-blue, circular lake plunge 2,000-feet deep, following the contours of a crater formed from a massive volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. One still-intact volcano that looms over Portland is Mount Hood. It’s popular locally for its fantastic skiing, snowboarding, and hang-gliding opportunities. Portland itself is famed for its picturesque parks, with the Washington Park being the best known. It has a nationally acclaimed Japanese Garden, a large zoo, and the oldest public rose test garden in the U.S. The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center celebrates the bravery and determination that brought settlers along the Oregon Trail to settle in the fertile Willamette Valley—Oregon’s legendary “land of milk and honey.” And for a thrilling journey of your own through the state’s marvels, the Cascade Lakes Highway will thread you through a varied landscape of volcanoes, waterfalls, lakes, and gorges.
Where to stay in Oregon
Portland, the largest city in Oregon, sits in the middle of some of the most dramatic scenery in the state. It makes a great base for those intent on exploring the great outdoors. It’s also the epicenter of the local food scene, packed with restaurants, microbreweries, and artisan markets. Bend is an excellent city for those keen on adventure, lying close to Crater Lake. A good choice for those traveling with kids is to book a family-friendly hotel in Oregon’s capital Salem—a small city with a historic downtown, museums, and a pleasant vibe. Eugene, by contrast, is student town that feels more lively, and known for its sports, arts, and theaters.
How to get to Oregon
There’s plenty of choice for those flying in to Oregon. Apart from Portland International Airport, Eugene has the Mahlon Sweet Field airport, while Redmond, Bend, and Madras are served by Redmond Roberts Field. Rogue Valley Airport in Medford covers the far south of Oregon. Amtrak offers 3 rail choices—from Chicago to Portland, LA to Portland (stopping at Salem, Albany, and Eugene), and the daily Seattle to Portland service. For road travel to Oregon, I-5 is the interstate of choice from both California and Seattle. If you’re driving in from the east, then I-84 will get you in from Idaho.
