Where to stay in Djerba

Djerba Hotels

Sand-coloured fortresses bake in the sun as camels lollop along the beach. In the desert, quad-bikes are kicking up a sandstorm, while in whitewashed synagogues, a sense of coolness and calm reigns. This is Djerba, a Tunisian island just off the southern coast of the country. Bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, it’s a crossroads of cultures which makes it a fascinating place to explore. But if you want to just kick back and sunbathe, Djerba has the beaches for that too.

Things to see

More or less in the centre of this sun-soaked island, the El Ghriba Synagogue is one of its most significant religious sites. Though it’s a Muslim-majority area, there’s a long Jewish history here too, and this synagogue is the highlight. Outside, it’s a blank canvas – just a series of white, blocky buildings. Venture inside, however, and it dazzles with a highly decorative, cloistered hall, where every spare inch of wall is etched with intricate, Arabic designs. In the very south of the island, Guellala Museum is well worth a visit. Positioned on a hilltop overlooking the sea, the views are breathtaking, and the cultural exhibits inside very interesting. You can learn about local fishing industries, marriage ceremonies, or ancient history. The north coast offers the best beaches, and Houmt Souk Harbour is a vision of traditional life. Pottery is piled high on the harbour edge, and sold in the souk.
