Find out more about Ostia Antica

With its stunning beaches, superbly preserved ancient ruins, and relaxed night-life, this one-time Ancient Roman port offers the best of Rome—but by the sea. Ostia lies only a few miles south-west of Downtown Rome, but has a completely different atmosphere. It is separated from the capital by several beautiful parks and nature reserves, so hotels in Ostia give you a chance to step down a gear—while still enjoying some of the Eternal City's most fascinating history.

Hotels in Ostia

Many of the best Ostia hotel rates can be found in its beach hotels, between the port and the Lido di Castel Fusano. Some, like the Hotel La Scaletta, offer real elegance on the beach-front. Others are charming B&Bs, providing a warm welcome at budget rates. Further inland are hotels that are close to the famed ruins of Ostia Antica. La Dolce Sosta is one such hotel, and has received great reviews. Many top-class Ostia hotels also lie along the main route of the Via Cristoforo Colombo. They range from large family-friendly hotels to superb little villas, like the Notti Romane.

Things to see in Ostia

Apart from its sandy Mediterranean beaches and its closeness to other key sites of the Eternal City, Ostia's biggest attraction is the wonderful ruins of the old Roman port, or Ostia Antica, which also includes a small museum. But there's so much more to see and do among the 10,000 acres of Ancient Roman streets and plazas. Many of the 2,000-year-old buildings are exceptionally well preserved. You can wander among looming Roman warehouses, see colorful mosaics in Roman baths and temples, and even check out the dock-workers’ apartments. More history can be found at the Castello Giulio II, a graceful Renaissance castle from the 15th century. But it's not all about the historical attractions in Ostia. The neighborhood offers lovely walks around the pine woods of Castelfusano, behind the beach. And there is more modern culture to be found in the tranquil Piazza Umberto, which often hosts art festivals at the weekend.

Good for families

Ostia is a family-friendly way to enjoy Rome. There's plenty of accessible history close by to fascinate adults, while the beaches offer plenty of diversion and entertainment when the kids grow tired of ancient history. The neighborhood's accommodation offers excellent value for families, too. Outside of high season, many great Ostia hotel deals can be found among its villas and B&Bs. Ostia also makes for a great base for those budget travelers who want to dip in and out of Rome, while still enjoying a relaxing and hassle-free vacation by the sea in a budget Ostia hotel.

How to get to Ostia

If you're coming in to Rome by plane, getting to Ostia couldn't be simpler—Rome's international airport at Fiumicino is just across the Tiber. From there you catch the bus from Terminal 2 to Ostia's central train station, which takes around 30 minutes. For those coming by rail, there are frequent trains on the Roma-Lido suburban commuter service. It runs from the Porta San Paolo station, with a stop at the Ostia Antica station. Fares are covered by Rome's daily transport passes. Much of your travel in Ostia can be done on foot, but there is a local bus service that runs from the beach to Ostia Antica.
