We arrived at 6pm to be told our room was not ready (check in from 3pm). Given what was supposed to be an upgrade….. the water did not drain from the shower so my daughter said it smelt in the bathroom when she went in the shower. Tried to book a meal in the hotel restaurant, restaurant half empty but told we could not get in until 9.15pm (this was at 6.45 when we asked) Rudely woken by the laundry delivery at 7am. The laundry room was directly below our bedroom. The hotel must be fully aware of this room above the laundry room. It is an absolute disgrace for a client to pay the money I did for the hotel to think it is alright to place anyone in that room, knowing that that persons stay will be disrupted. Furthermore, next morning went for breakfast and the waiter not only could not be bothered to give us a selection of pastries, he gave us three of the same….(it was all table service) he actually slammed the plate down. (Obviously not happy with his job). So the night away was not a very pleasant one to say the least. I had booked this hotel as we were attending the cookery school in the hotel the next morning.

RECCOMENDED Plenty of pluses . Couple of minuses.

Great location /concierge greeting, easy check in . All staff were extremely pleasant and polite. Olde world charm oozed class and style that was enhanced with Christmas decorations .We had an executive room with a fantastic deep bath. Although everything was spotlessly clean there were areas of concern, Deep scratch to left hand side of headboard showing different colour wood under the veneer, the cream carpet in the room had Visible stains and plenty of wear not a good look for a 5 star hotel that charges a premium rate. Some tiles in the bathroom had dark mould stains on the grout (only needs bleaching ). When sat in the bath you can see under the basin and the poor finishing off of the tiles and framework supporting the basin. The bath and shower although lovely you have to turn on by getting in the bath and reaching through the shower water fall zone, you get a cold blast when turning it on and have to stand under it whilst finding appropriate temperature. To plug the bath in - because the shower screen is right across the tap and plug access area- some people may have to get in the bath to plug it in and turn it on . Room always seemed dingy due to no central hanging light ( would show more stains on carpet) Spa staff great but IDEALLY MUST BOOK SESSIONS BEFORE YOU GO OR MISS OUT. £6 for a single gin / vodka £12 a double- mixer on top.expensive! Parking limited and £35 a night ! Ate out as restaurant expensive. Truthful review would recommend and will stay again.

Wonderful experience. All staff amazingly friendly and helpful. No snobbery about the hotel, staff or other visitors. Comfy and spacious room with massive bath. Spa lovely but need to book in advance of stay. Breakfast, we had no problems as arrived before 8.50 but then got very busy both mornings with long waits for other guests.

    Great staff

Hotel was nice. Service was top notch, but the photos online do not match the rooms. Only some are “modern” like the photos the rest are out dated and dark. Given the price difference to the rest of York, if you can’t get a modern room, I would not pay the price.

    Very disappointed!

We booked a heritage suite but very disappointed with the view - or no view as was the case. We tried to book in for afternoon tea when we arrived but it was fully booked, we also tried to book into the restaurant for dinner when we arrived which was also fully booked. Very disappointing that no availability is held off for hotel paying guests. Spoilt our dining experience at the hotel. We had to order bar food in 1907 bar. They got the order wrong when we could eventually find something that wasn't also sold out. All in all not a great stay. Bar service in the 1907 bar was also extremely slow.

    Excellent stay at the Grand.

Thoroughly deserving of every one of its 5 stars. Fabulous hotel. Staff exceptional - particularly the concierge guys. I’ve stayed in a lot of hotels over the years but this is probably the nicest I’ve stayed in in the UK. Bar a wee bit small for the size of the place but that’s my only slight criticism. Within easy walking distance of town and the station. And valet parking. Think I’ll bring my car next time. We’ll definitely be back. Pricey - but you get what you pay for.

    Ideal to explore York!

Loved it. The only thing to improve on is the room temperature which was not regulated as well as it could have been. This is a small point as the location and facilities were 5 star. Thank you

    Fantastic customer service. Highly recommended.

The staff at this hotel were wonderful! Every single member of the team was friendly helpful and courteous. This shine through even though we only stayed for one night. At the he end of out stay I lost an item of jewellery and they went out of their way to help find it. Some of the best customer service I’ve ever had. Highly recommended.
