Profile: Old Town Edinburgh

Profile: Old Town Edinburgh

Old Town refers to the oldest part of Scotland's capital city. Its ancient topography, known as "crag and tail," dates back to the ice age. Old castles and centuries-old theaters await your perusal. The Royal Mile features most of the shops, bars, cafés, and bars that wend and wind through small alleys.

National Museum of Scotland, St. Giles Cathedral, and the Scottish Parliament are among the most notable and historic ways to discover the history of this charming country. You can walk everywhere in Old Town, following in the footsteps of kings, invading armies, the condemned, and the celebrated.

Massive problem when we arrived the team had cancelled our booking as someone else with a similar name had previously checked in so they assumed it was a double up.. so we had to be put in a temporary room and moved early part way through the stay, ruined the holiday, not really apologetic about it. Charged to store luggage, kitchen facilities in the flat very poor and under equipped, when asking the staff for an additional pan (only 1 in the whole flat) told there was nothing they could do. A fire alarm went off at 4am (not the staffs fault) however NO direction given at all just left standing outside not knowing what was happening. A shambles of a stay the staff seemed more keen on chatting to each other and enjoying the festival than helping

Very dirty. The floors obviously hasn’t been vacuumed in weeks if not months. 2 showers on the entire floor. No bath mats meant that the shower was a death trap. £3 for towel hire, £3 for luggage storage per item

    Basic but pleasant

The room was very basic but clean. The downside was that there were no towels and not having been to any hotels previously that did not supply towels we hadn't taken any so was unable to take a shower. This wasn't ideal as the day/night we were there was very hot!!

  • 10.0.Exceptional

It was in a *great* location, it was always well-cleaned, and it felt secure - especially since we were six floors up. My only complaint is that the lack of either hand towels or dryers in the bathroom and kitchen was a bit difficult to deal with and the kitchen wasn't as well stocked as it could have been. Overall, I definitely recommend this hostel.

    Basic and clean

Needed a cheap / clean bed for the evening before an early trip to the airport. This was exactly that. Nothing more, nothing less. Need to rent towels for the showers.

  • 6.0.Good

    Basic accommodations

The location was excellent - walking distance to everything in Old Town. The room was cramped because the beds were bigger than standard twins. The desk chair was unusable because it could not be pulled out far enough to be sat on. There was no place to hang towels or clothes. The mattresses were thin, and so the springs could be felt. There was a charge for the towels that was not mentioned in the reservation information (one pound per towel per day). The bathrooms were clean and updated and sharing them was not a problem. The staff was pleasant. Excellent wifi. The reservation mentioned a breakfast for £3.50, but it was £4.50.
