The hotel itself is a little tired but it's in a great area and the staff were very helpful and genuinely seemed to enjoy their jobs. The people make the hotel. The room was clean and tidy, all you want !

Beautiful old hotel in a peaceful setting
This is a very old impressive building set in a valley with beautiful huge trees and loads of parking. It's quiet other than the trains passing through the valley alongside the river. It's not modern and trendy with posh furnishings but the staff are great and the whole experience is homely.

Appealing from the outside
Hotel was very appealing from the photos and even upon arrival. This was not the case upon getting into our room though. Our stay was during middle of March so temperatures were a bit lower at night. Radiator in the room barely put off any heat, water for the shower was luke warm at best! Had to ask the staff for extra blankets as the room was so cold. Mold was found around the window sills and in the shower. Will not be staying here again. Looks as thought they took better care of the outside grounds then the interior rooms.

The room was clean with linen in good condition, however, as with other hotels in this chain it was rather tired looking in some places. The uneven floors and up and down stairs added to the character, but fixtures and fittings made it look tatty in places rather than add to what could be a lovely hotel and keeps it at a 3 star standard. I was disappointed with the restaurant having booked it for a birthday celebration, the a la carte menu was limited and was nothing special coupled with being set in what reminded me of a community or church hall. The same venue was used for breakfast which was adequate for such a meal. The breakfast too was okay but not much choice - not even fried eggs, however, the croissants were good, something that some hotels fail miserably on. I’d give this a 7/10 but hotels.com only allow 6 or 8 and a 6 would be a tad harsh!
