San Telmo’s cobblestone streets pave the way toward historic churches, buildings, museums, and antique stores, but this neighborhood in southern Buenos Aires is equally brimming with bohemian cafés, craft beer pubs, and tango parlors. In fact, it’s reputed to be the most important tango district in the city.
Visitors can take tango classes or catch a performance at Plaza Dorrego from 6 to 9 pm on Sundays. If you need a little liquid courage first, try La Puerta Roja, where the locals drink, or the Gibraltar, where you’ll find expats, pool tables, and a patio.
