Is this even a place, or just a front for a car rental scam? The address is at an unmarked location. They would not honor our reservation when we tried to reach them by phone, and we were left with no accommodation in the middle of the night, with two exhausted children in tow. Complete nightmare!! Avoid at all costs!

    Requesting full refund!

Like others who have rated this hotel I'll say this was a terrible experience. My daughter and I arrived to find the hotel was not located at the address; apparently the hotel had changed owners a month earlier and we were not informed. So we were standing out in the street midday without a hotel. Our taxi driver took us to another hotel that was already completely booked then finally took us back to the airport Holiday Express. We were relieved to have a place to crash after 2 hours of confusion. The new owners NEVER informed us of the changes. I'm requesting my money back!

Ultimately a less than perfect experience

I very much enjoyed the atmosphere and greeting I received at Hotel La Cuesta. Given the price, and the fact it is a hostel, I was comfortable with my room. I was traveling with my small service (documented in US and Costa Rica) animal and since the venue was marked as "pet friendly" there were no issues at check in. On my third day, I was asked if I would like cleaning service. This was not offered previously. I indicated yes. Within five minutes of the cleaning staff entering the room, I was asked by another staff member to come to the front desk where I was put on the phone with the hotel manager. He indicated my dog "excessively shedded" and asked if he could charge me $10 to clean the blanket. I indicated I thought this inappropriate but did not want to cause trouble so I agreed. My dog is a short-hair and does not "excessively shed." When I returned to my room, my sheets had been replaced with "thread-bare, see-through" sheets and there was no blanket. I stayed another five nights without any blankets and had to pile my clothing from my suitcase on the thin sheet to stay warm. The final night I slept in my clothes. As I was leaving for the airport, I was asked for the $10 cleaning fee and I indicated I would take it up with management. Had I been provided proper bedding, I would have paid the additional $10. But given I was made VERY UNCOMFORTABLE by what is illegal in Costa Rica (The country honors service dog designations), I did not pay the fee.

This is “my” place in Alejuela.

Wonderful hospitality. Family friendly atmosphere. Helpful fun environment moments from airport. Great for the night after or the night before a long flight.

‘Warm’ convenient to airport, clean and ’cheap’

Really a great simple place close to airport so great to stay when coming in or leaving. Family-run and very welcoming. Homemade tradition Costa Rican breakfast for $3. Lots of public space and interesting clientele so many opportunities to learn and meet new people. Unbelievably inexpensive: <$20. Take Uber, not taxi. It’s a couple dollar ride from airport but taxi Took the king way and turned fare into $12. It was late and I’d been flying all day with a pet so didn’t scrutinize sufficiently.

You are greeted with a locked gate, where you have to knock loudly. Off putting for foreigners. It was a bit run down with places under repair. There was no hot water. Bed was adequate, place was clean.

Warm water in the shower. Kitchen was available for use. We stayed in the room by the living room - when the light was on and you are sleeping in the top bunk the light is pretty bright. Also the walls are thin so you can hear the people walking above you and the people talking in the livingroom.
