Find out more about Auckland (AKL-Auckland Intl.)

Exploring Auckland Intl. Airport

Auckland Intl. Airport is the main gateway and largest airport in New Zealand, receiving connections from Asia, Australia, North American and Europe. The airport is situated to the south of Auckland on the shores of Manukau Harbour and takes most of its flights from Australian and Asian cities. Although there are direct flights from the US, coming from Europe entails at least one stop.

There are three terminals—one international and two domestic—which are connected by free shuttle, and facilities include ATMs, Wi-Fi internet and shops and eateries. The international terminal has the best of it, including a McDonald's, local cafés and dozens of shops and duty-free. There’s no rail access to town, but buses are frequent and taxis are reasonably priced. Car hire is popular due to the size of Auckland.

Sights nearby

Most visitors head direct for Auckland where the best sights are, but if you’re on a layover or staying at a hotel out near the airport, such as the Novotel Auckland Airport, there are worthwhile attractions nearby too, including a butterfly park and theme park.

- Butterfly Creek

This entertaining park is right outside the airport and features some beautiful creatures from Asia and South America. There are hundreds of rare butterflies fluttering around at the Tropical Butterfly House, as well as big crocodiles, baby alligators and more. Bugs House is home to loads of creepy crawlies, while infants will love interacting with the animals at Buttermilk Farm or riding the train.

- Rainbow's End

Rainbow's End is another worthwhile family attraction not far from the airport, right in Manukau City, due east of the airport. It features a number of great thrills, including a rollercoaster and log flume, as well as less intense rides for the younger ones such as bumper cars and go-karts. Entry is a bit steep though.

- City sights

Auckland has the best sights. Start with the lofty Sky Tower right in the CBD as it comes with loads of attractions, including the tower itself and a big casino. Rooms at the Sky Tower are excellent. At the water is the American Express Viaduct Harbour of America's Cup fame. Head here for great restaurants and shopping and park yourself at the Sebel Suites Auckland to be within good reach. Check out the luxury yachts if you dare.

- Auckland War Memorial Museum

This fine museum is located in the Domain park area to the east of town and is a must if you only do one museum. There are some quality Maori displays here, including an ancient Maori boat, along with stunning arts and crafts. The Domain itself is Auckland’s largest city park and is a fine place to have a wander. It regularly plays host to outdoor concerts.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

There is quite good eating at the airport, with coffee shops, cafés, bars, a McDonalds and more. The shopping here is expensive, but quality items can be had at the likes of the Sunglass Hut and Canterbury Clothing. The latter is where you can big up All Blacks attire. In the town, the city centre thoroughfares High Street and Vulcan Lane are both excellent for eating, shopping and making merry. Hotel DeBrett is one of the comfiest places to stay in this area and has stylish eating, while the suburbs of Ponsonby and Parnell are more laidback.

Public transport

Buses, shuttles and taxis run to the city and hotels, with the Airbus Express running 24 hours from both the international and domestic terminals. Taxis are not too expensive either, with both options taking about 40 minutes to reach the city. Buses, trains and taxis are the public transport, along with ferries across the harbour, but options are quite limited so having a car is best for looking around at large. If you plan on doing a lot of sightseeing right in town, consider the Auckland Discovery Pass which covers the buses and trains.
