Noumea Hotels

Cruise the turquoise South Pacific waters through isolated island escapes, hiking into the hills for a bird’s eye view of the rambling city below, and laze on tranquil beaches beneath the shady leaves of welcoming palm trees as you discover a laid back pace of life in the city of Noumea. Here in New Caledonia, every day passes at a leisurely pace. Chic cafés overlooking the marina open their doors early to waft the scent of fresh pastries into the morning air and tour boats chug lazily in and out of the harbor taking tourists on ocean voyages.

Things to see

Beneath striking blue skies of the South Pacific, the open-air Stade Numa-Daly Magenta easily fills its 10,000 seats on match days as the islanders and visiting spectators celebrate the universal game of football in this modern arena. From the cheering of jubilant crowds, you can head northwards, leaving the heart of Noumea behind, to witness the cacophony of squawking native birds in the Noumea Zoo and Botanical Gardens. Caged flying areas are home to brightly colored birds, from the startling green feathers of the Red Crowned Parakeet, to the dramatic tail features of the decorative White Peacocks. You can visit unusual fruit bats, hanging shyly from craggy branches as they wait for night to fall, or witness flightless Cagous hopping across their imitation forest floor. At the heart of the city, the Place des Cocotiers is a landscaped square, adorned with lofty palm trees and scented blossoming shrubs. An open pavilion stands at the center, and gargantuan chess pieces sit on a checkerboard of black and white squares. Weekly markets converge on its red bricked pathways, selling freshly grown produce and local crafts.

Hotels in Noumea

Most hotels in Noumea hug the southern coastline near the picturesque Baie de l’Anse Vata, a blend of exclusive hotels in towering balconied buildings, or spacious apartments that overlook rambling complexes with tempting lagoon-shaped pools. If you choose to stay in luxury hotels in Noumea, you’ll be delighted with the accommodation on offer. Most rooms in this budget range have individual air conditioning units, flat-screen televisions, and WiFi, not to mention luxury bathrooms with complimentary toiletries. Mid-range hotels are also plentiful, and you can choose self-catering residence guestrooms with luxury kitchens and private entrances if you prefer a little more freedom than a traditional hotel.

Where to stay

The coastline, with its long stretch of curving sand, caressed by the lapping ocean surf, is the focal point of the town, so you’ll find most hotels in Noumea dotted along the shore. They stand in private grounds filled with the palm trees that blanket much of the area in vivid green. Inside the city, the architecture points to a mix of cultures and eras. French stone-built cathedrals with a typical Romanesque-cross design, red tiled rooftops of whitewashed colonial-era townhouses, and single family homes with Melanesian flair fill its streets. Along the Promenade Roger Laroque, the fine dining restaurants of luxury hotels in Noumea sit side by side with quaint pizzerias and ethnic Asian eateries.

How to get to Noumea

Most travelers making their way to this tropical South Pacific island will arrive by plane, landing at the La Tontouta International Airport that sits about half an hour outside the city, although connecting flights from neighboring Australia may enter via Noumea Magenta Airport instead. There are no trains on the island, but the local bus service provides onward travel from both ports of entry, and serves popular tourist areas in the city. The alternative is to hire a taxi or private car.
