Exploring Ampang

Although today Ampang is essentially a part of Kuala Lumpur, it has a long history that stretches back to the era of Raja Abdullah and the opening of the area to tin mining in the 1800s. In 1880, Ampang was briefly the capital of Selangor. But eventually Kuala Lumpur overshadowed the settlement, which was absorbed into the greater metropolitan area.

Today, Ampang Road is best known as the main artery leading to the Petronas Twin Towers. Many pre-war and British colonial buildings still line Ampang Road, making it one of the most charming scenes in the capital. The National Visual Arts Gallery and legendary Selangor Turk Club are two of the main attractions in this part of Kuala Lumpur. Just next door is the Istana Budaya, the country’s premier cultural centre where all kinds of cultural performances are held.

National Visual Arts Gallery
Malaysia’s premier venue for both local and regional artwork, the National Visual Arts Gallery was first opened in 1958 by the original prime minister of Malaysia. It’s a striking piece of architecture that contains an eclectic collection of different forms of art, both contemporary and historic. Right next door is the Istana Budaya, the country’s top venue for theatre and performing arts. This respected centre showcases both Malay and international artists throughout the year.

Petronas Twin Towers
Once the world’s tallest skyscraper, this beautiful pair of steel-and-glass towers is the architectural icon of Kuala Lumpur. You can see the towers from anywhere in Ampang, and they are worth a close look. The views from the Skybridge that spans the two towers are outstanding, and filling the base of the skyscraper is the posh Suria KLCC shopping centre.

Merdeka Square
At the centre of the capital is the historic area known as Merdeka Square. This is where Malaysian independence happened and where most of the star historic attractions are located, like St Mary’s Cathedral and Jamek Mosque. You can easily spend a day here walking around the buzzing streets of Chinatown, admiring the unique Malay-Islamic architecture, and shopping in the 1936 Central Market.

With over 400 stores on six floors, Suria KLCC stocks a huge range of items. The Great Eastern Mall, Avenue K, and Ampang Park are three other well-known shopping hubs in the capital. Public transport

Ampang lies on the eastern edge of Kuala Lumpur, with plenty of options to move throughout the rest of the city.
