Narita Introduction

Narita is the home of the Narita International Airport, Japan's main airport and the gateway to the greater Tokyo area. Located in the Chiba Prefecture, Narita once had an agriculture-based economy. The establishment of the airport in the 1970s has transformed the city into a major tourist destination. Narita is now better known as a cosmopolitan town with a variety of dining and entertainment options. At the same time, it's a temple town deeply entrenched in ancient Buddhist and Shinto traditions.

Hotels in Narita

Most of the hotels that you'll find in Narita are upscale, especially those around Narita International Airport. These hotels cater mostly to business travelers. Thus, they offer amenities such as convenient business centers, high-speed internet access, gourmet restaurants, and in-house spas or Japanese-style bathhouses. Many of these hotels do offer family-friendly services, including cribs and rooms with kitchenettes. If you're looking for discount hotels in the Narita area, you're likely to find them around the city's outskirts. You may have to spend more time commuting to get to where you want to be if you stay at these cheap Narita hotels.

Where to stay

Narita International Airport has a couple of hotels right within its complex. They're convenient options if you have an early flight, are waiting for a connecting flight, or want to rest after a long-haul flight. Right outside the airport, you'll find a number of 3-star hotels and business hotels. Staying at one of these hotels is a good choice if you're in Narita for business and have no sightseeing plans. But if you're in Narita to go sightseeing with family, you should consider a hotel near the JR Narita and Keisei Narita stations. You can move around more easily if you stay in this area.

Things to see

The thousand-year-old Narita-san Shinsho Temple is Narita's most popular attraction. This temple complex contains astounding religious buildings and gardens. Festivals celebrated at this temple are some of the most important in Japan's religious calendar. The approach to Narita-san is the Omotesando, a kilometer-long road lined with stores on both sides. You can buy traditional souvenirs and crafts from these stores. Visiting Sawada's historic center northeast of Narita City will take you back in time. Along its canal stand well-preserved buildings dating back to the Edo Period. Close to the airport is the National Museum of Japanese History on the grounds of Sakura Castle. The museum features galleries covering different periods of Japanese history. Outside the airport is the Museum of Aeronautical Sciences. You'll find real aircraft on display here, as well as flight simulators and aircraft replicas. The museum's observation deck has views of the airport's runway.

How to get to Narita

If you're coming from Narita International Airport, you can take the train to Narita City. Keisei and JR East both run trains connecting the city and the airport. Keisei trains depart every 20 minutes, while JR East trains depart every hour. You can also take the Keisei and JR East trains to Narita from Tokyo. Keisei's limited express trains run between Keisei Ueno Station in Tokyo to Narita International Airport, with a stop at Keisei Narita Station. On the other hand, JR East's Sobu Line runs between Tokyo Station and Narita International Airport. It also stops at Narita Station.
