Exploring Landmark Convention Centre

Situated within the stunning entertainment district of Darling Harbour, the Sydney Convention Centre is a large conference and convention venue that has operated since 1988. It rests adjacent to several famous landmarks, including the lively Cockle Bay Wharf and the fascinating Tumbalong Park. The centre, one of the largest venues of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, accommodated several important sporting competitions during the event, such as wrestling, weightlifting, and judo. It has a capacity for many thousands of visitors and consists of two main areas – a convention section and an exhibition section.

Operated by the Accor Hotel Group, the Sydney Convention Centre is only a short distance from the heart of the city, making it easy for visitors to travel here on foot from most points within the central business district. Nevertheless, there are several nearby public transport options. Darling Harbour, where the Convention Centre is located, features dozens of hotels - both high-end luxury spots and cheaper backpacker accommodation.

There is a range of options for all travelers. The most popular hotel in Sydney is the Apartment CBD - Pitt, which has been booked &TravellersChoiceBooked1 times from our Hotels.com verified guests. Our guests also highly recommended Darling Harbour Getaway in Sydney as it has been reserved &TravellersChoiceBooked2 times.

Sights nearby

Sydney Convention Centre is within a stone’s throw of several important family-friendly attractions, making this area a great spot to base yourself for days out as well as conventions.

- Sydney Aquarium

Boasting an incredible array of marine creatures, the Sydney Aquarium is a phenomenal, family-friendly attraction found along the shoreline of Darling Harbour. Several marine environments are replicated here, including a reef, a northern river, and a seal sanctuary. A range of Australian aquatic animals are on display, including several species of shark, platypus, seals, crocodiles, and dugongs. However, the main attraction is the see-through tunnel which allows visitors to experience life under the sea.

- Chinatown

Plenty of authentic Chinese culture is on display within Sydney’s Chinatown district. Resting just a short walk from the Convention Centre, this East Asia-themed precinct is swarming with delightful restaurants, interesting retailers, and historical landmarks. Visiting this site is a must for culture vultures. Market City and the Chinese Garden of Friendship are both part of this impressive precinct.

- Darling Harbour

Darling Harbour is one of Sydney’s most exciting destinations. It’s found just to the west of downtown Sydney and can be reached via ferry, train, light rail, or bus. Among its many fascinating features is the plethora of restaurants and shops in Harbourside Centre, with attractions like the Sydney Aquarium and the National Maritime Museum found nearby. Fortunately for tourists, there are a number of high-end and mid-range hotels worth staying at here, including The Ibis Sydney Darling Harbour and the four-star Oaks Goldsbrough Apartments.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

The area surrounding the Sydney Convention Centre is filled with fantastic dining and shopping experiences. The most notable place to enjoy eating out and a bit of retail therapy is Harbourside Shopping Centre, at Cockle Bay Wharf. There are dozens of retail stores, clubs, pubs, and restaurants operating here. Of course, visitors can also reach nearby Chinatown and Paddy’s Markets, which are both great spots for a memorable afternoon of eating and shopping. If tourists are looking for more up-scale establishments, hotels like the PARKROYAL Darling Harbour offer delectable dining opportunities.

Public transport

Prior to 2013, the Sydney Monorail connected the Convention Centre to downtown Sydney and Darling Harbour. However, this service has since been discontinued. Nevertheless, there are plenty of other transport options available. A light rail station rests behind the centre, linking it to Central Station and Haymarket, among other places. Ferries drop passengers at King Street Wharf and Darling Harbour, which are within walking distance of the centre, and Sydney Buses can be caught at Harris Street.
