Find out more about The Entrance

Exploring The Entrance

The Entrance has long served as a tranquil refuge for those seeking an escape from the big city of Sydney, just over 100kms from this peaceful Central Coast peninsula which is surrounded by water on three sides. This coastal New South Wales community's unusual name comes from the channel between The Entrance and the Tuggerah Lakes. Narrow and long peninsulas separate the lakes from the Pacific Ocean.

The Entrance's first guest house opened in 1885. Well over a century later, most of the community's small holiday cottages have been replaced by large hotels like the four-star Oaks Waterfront Resort - The Entrance. Yet more intimate establishments, such as the Lavender House B&B, are still available in the 'Pelican Capital of Australia.' Every year, about 20,000 people feed the pelicans who gather around The Entrance waterfront at 15:30 each day.

There is a range of options for all travelers. The most popular hotel in The Entrance is the EJ Homes at The Entrance, which has been booked &TravellersChoiceBooked1 times from our Hotels.com verified guests. Our guests also highly recommended Ocean Front at The Entrance in The Entrance as it has been reserved &TravellersChoiceBooked2 times.

Sights nearby

It takes an hour or two to reach The Entrance from Sydney along the Newcastle Freeway, depending on the time of day or year. The Central Coast Highway is the main road leading directly here. Other nearby popular holiday spots include the seaside Wyrrabalong National Park and the upscale resort of Terrigal.

- Memorial Park

Many of The Entrance's main attractions occur in and around its Memorial Park, situated on the community's foreshore. The busiest times of all, however, are each month's first and third Saturdays, when more than 200 stalls feature art, crafts, and fresh produce at The Entrance Farmers’ Markets. Next to Memorial Park stands Vera's Water Garden, a popular place for children to cool off on hot summer days.

- Tuggerah Lake

The biggest of the three Tuggerah Lakes is one of the Central Coast's most popular fishing spots. A lamp and a net are often the only gear required to catch the prawns that swim in the lake in the middle of summer. Bright yellow markers clearly indicate areas where fishing is restricted or prohibited. Although the lake's surface can be steep and choppy, boating is safe as long as proper precautions are followed.

- Wyrrabalong National Park

The Darkinjung word from which this coastal national park received its name means 'headland overlooking the sea.' This appropriate name comes from the first people who lived on this park's land between Forresters Beach and Bateau Bay. Sandstone and shale cliffs stand above the south end of this park. Cromarty Hill's Wyrrabalong Lookout supplies the best views of the nearby Skillion. Crackneck Lookout, on the other hand, is the park's most popular picnic spot.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Most of The Entrance's places to eat, drink, or shop are situated near the water. The Entrance Road contains a few Chinese restaurants, but an Arabic restaurant complete with traditional low seating tables near the Tuggerah Lakes foreshores may be one of the community's most unique dining offerings. In addition to the main The Entrance Farmers’ Markets which take place at Memorial Park two Saturdays per month, the Lions Club holds a Sunday market of second-hand goods and the Waterfront Arts and Craft Market sells handmade souvenirs each Saturday. The Lakeside Shopping Centre is the region's biggest concentration of shops.

Public transport

Waldorf Apartment Hotel - The Entrance and most other hotels lie within walking distance of most major attractions. Red Bus Services operates half a dozen bus routes between The Entrance and other Central Coast communities. Tuggerah is the nearest rail station, while Palm Beach Ferries travel daily between Sydney and Ettalong Beach. However, a car is this area's most practical means of transportation.
