Sightseeing near Chiang Mai Night Bazaar

- Tha Phae Gate

Tha Phae Gate is the east entrance to the old city district. It is part of the wall that surrounded the city at its founding. Unlike earlier Thai settlements that were oval, Chiang Mai’s architectural plan called for a rectangular moat and wall. Their purpose was to protect the city from Burmese invasion. The eight main gates of the old city face a specific direction according to the eight compass points. Each has its own astrological significance. Tha Phae Gate faces east and signifies prosperity. Historically, it was the main gate through which monks, traders, and diplomats went to enter Chiang Mai. Much of the original city wall fell to ruin, but Tha Phae Gate remains. Today, it is the site of many cultural activities and festival celebrations.

- Wiang Kum Kam

Wiang Kum Kam is an ancient city from all the way back to the eighth-century Haripunchai Kingdom. Later on it served as the capital of the then Lanna Kingdom for a short while until Chiang Mai was chosen to replace it in 1296. The city was completely submerged under the Ping River, which suddenly changed its course and swept the whole city under and it was later discovered in 1984. One of the main features of Wiang Kim Kam is Wat Chedi Liam (or Temple with an Angular-based Chedi). Widely depicted in postcards, the temple features a Burmese-style pavilion (restored in 1908 by a Burmese trader) and a five-tiered chedi set on a square base – the signature style of the early Lanna period. In addition, you will also see ancient structures; some restored, others left in their original ruined state.

Transportation near Chiang Mai Night Bazaar

Getting around by public transport involves just two options – tuk-tuks and the red, converted truck songthaews serving as the city’s buses. Both can be hired on the street, but tuk-tuks are the preferred, if more pricey option as drivers take visitors directly to their destination. To make sure you get where you need to via a songthaew, it’s useful to speak basic Thai.
