Exploring University of Auckland

New Zealand’s largest university occupies an ideal patch of the city of Auckland, between the expansive Domain Park and the bustling Queen Street shopping thoroughfare. The university itself hails from the 1880s and is home to around 40,000 students (including 2,000 Maori and many international students) based about several campuses.

The main campus is the City Campus, which is located close to the Auckland Central Business District (CBD) and Albert Park, itself home to Auckland’s esteemed Art Gallery. City Campus has several landmarks, including a historic clock tower building, though most hotels here are located near the North Shore Campus, including the The Quadrant Hotel & Suites and the nearby Quest On Nelson Serviced Apartments. Visitors are able to take in the university’s museums, galleries, and libraries, plus there are theatres and stunning gardens.

Sights nearby

The University of Auckland is well located in the city, being near to popular tourist sights and public transit routes. Queen Street, for shopping, and the Domain, for strolling and the War Memorial Museum, are close by.

- Auckland Domain

This mature nature area of Auckland abuts the University of Auckland to its southeast and is sandwiched by Parnell. It is the largest and the most visited park in the city, being best known for being home to the brilliant Auckland War Memorial Museum. The park is based around the extinct Pukekawa volcano and is fun to visit when there’s a concert on. The park has miles of paths to walk, jog, or skate, though the museum is the star attraction here with its focus on Maori arts and crafts.

- Albert Park

Located on the other side of the University of Auckland is this beautifully-landscaped park. It has pleasant walking and makes for a perfect picnic site in between the nearby shopping areas of Queen Street and High Street. There are plenty of shaded areas to duck into, along with a pretty fountain in the centre. At the southwest corner is the top attraction, the Auckland Art Gallery. This revamped museum displays some of New Zealand’s most impressive contemporary and classic art and sculpture collections, including works by Colin McCahon.

- Queen Street Mall

Shoppers hit this busy thoroughfare in their numbers. It’s hard to miss—lying between the university and Sky Tower—and is loaded with big stores, smart boutiques, and seemingly endless eateries. The street goes from the main train station towards Ponsonby, farther south, and is populated by some of Auckland’s best hotels, such as the Mercure Auckland Windsor. It also has one or two impressive old buildings, of which the Auckland Town Hall is the best known.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Some of the best eating near to the University of Auckland can be had at Zoe’s Restaurant and Bar in the Copthorne Hotel Auckland City just north of the university grounds. Most eateries are located along the nearby lower Queen Street, however, where you’ll also find most of the shopping options in Auckland. For nightlife, close-by Vulcan Lane?a buzzing little street connecting Queen Street and High Street?has some of the funkiest bars in New Zealand. On campus, meanwhile, is the student-oriented Shadows Bar.

Public transport

Buses are the best form of public transport in this area, with frequent services running along Symonds Street and bisecting the University of Auckland district. They also run along Waterloo Quadrant, past some of the top hotels in the area. However, if you are staying here, you can easily walk to the harbour, Queen Street, and even the Domain and Parnell.
