Find out more about Queen Street Mall

Exploring Queen Street Mall

Situated in the very heart of Brisbane, the capital of Queensland and Australia’s third-largest city, Queen Street Mall is an excellent point from which to explore the city. The thoroughfare is surrounded by numerous historical, cultural, and natural attractions, and is well served by public transport. There are ample opportunities for great dining and drinking and, needless to say, first-rate shopping options in the area.

Sights nearby

There are a number of places of interest within walking distance of the mall. For attractions further afield, visitors will find the city’s public transport network more than adequate.

- ANZAC Square War Memorial

Within a stone’s throw of Queen Street Mall, Anzac Square is a state memorial to the men and women of Queensland who took part in wars from the Boer War up until the Vietnam War and other campaigns in Asia.

- MacArthur Museum Brisbane

Just minutes from Queen Street Mall on foot, the MacArthur Museum is located in the office where General MacArthur planned the Allies’ Far Eastern campaigns in WWII. With its themed displays and memorabilia, the museum does a good job of simulating the atmosphere of everyday life in wartime Brisbane.

- Brisbane City Hall and Museum of Brisbane

Brisbane’s imposing City Hall dates back to 1920. Up until construction of the Sydney Opera House, this recently restored building held the honour of being Australia’s most expensive. Originally located on the ground floor and in the basement, the Museum of Brisbane has now moved to a purpose-built location on the rooftop. The museum is a must-see for tourists thanks to its fascinating exhibitions chronicling the city's culture and heritage. For great vistas of downtown Brisbane, check out the viewing platform on the top of the tower clock.

- Roma Street Parkland

This scenic park is situated right in the heart of the city. Easily overlooked, it’s a lovely park with sub-tropical gardens and the Celebration Lawn, a green space that’s an ideal location for a picnic or just soaking up Brisbane’s wonderfully laid-back atmosphere.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Brisbane is nothing short of a foodie’s paradise. Whether it’s fine dining on the Brisbane River’s extensive waterfront, delicious international food or a classic Aussie grill you’re after, there is a huge range of restaurants, cafés, and bars to suit every palate and pocket.

Shopaholics can start at Queen Street Mall, which houses 180-plus stores including a branch of Myer department store. Brisbane Arcade and Broadway on the Mall are two other retail centres where you can find the latest in designer clothes. Emporium in nearby Fortitude Valley is the place for boutique shops and gourmet delicatessens, while the district of New Farm, just to the east of the CBD, features lots of interesting galleries.

Accommodation options in downtown Brisbane range from first-class hotels on the banks of the Brisbane River to boutique hotels, with both the Royal Albert Hotel and the Oaks Festival Towers recommended.

Public transport

You can easily get to tourist attractions close to Queen Street Mall on foot. The city has a comprehensive bus network. There is a free loop service downtown that runs from opposite Queen Street Mall and past Central Station to the riverside before returning to the CBD. The Great Circle line is a bus service that operates between the major suburban shopping centres and which connects with buses and trains to the CBD. The high-speed ferry service known as CityCat is a great way of getting around the city. Along with Melbourne, Brisbane was the first Australian city to introduce a bike hire scheme back in 2010. The city has a well-maintained network of cycle paths, including paths along the boardwalks of the riverfront.
