Where to stay in Amalfi

Amalfi Hotels

Bringing endless turquoise ocean, dramatic cliff faces, and stunning architecture together, Amalfi offers the very best of Italy in one neat package. Spend your time wandering between gentle beaches and open squares - where the aroma of roasted coffee beans floats above giant, colorful flowerpots. Or, dig a little deeper to discover this UNESCO World Heritage site's extraordinary tale of maritime power and natural disaster. Nothing beats breathing in Amalfi's crisp sea air, while chinking champagne glasses with a loved one from the comfort of your own sun-warmed balcony.

Things to see

Unwind to the sound of waves rolling ashore, as you bronze your skin on the town's main beach. The pebbly shoreline offers swimming and sunbathing within a 5-minute stroll of the town center, and it’s surrounded by restaurants serving succulent shellfish tangled in spaghetti, and Amalfi's own fiery salami - pezzanta. Take your time, as you rise up the Cathedral of Amalfi's 57-stepped staircase, to take in the beauty of the archway-laden building, which looks out over the town. The Moorish-influenced cathedral may not be Italy's oldest, but its 1,000 year old, algae-green, bronze door - and golden-bathed interior - combine to make it one of the most spectacular. Afterwards, you can discover the turbulent past of the now peaceful seaside town at the Municipal Museum of Amalfi. Sail back in time to learn how the town was once an independent maritime republic and a powerful Mediterranean trading hub. English exhibits succinctly tell the story of the town's rise to prominence, and its fall following a devastating tsunami strike in 1343.

Hotels in Amalfi

Only in Amalfi can you stay in the extraordinary opulence of a hotel burrowed into a cliff side, sitting just above a turreted sea fort. Watch tiny fishing boats jostle playfully with the waves in the harbor, or lie back to enjoy uninterrupted views of the cliff-framed sea from your shell-shaped bath or pillow-piled bed. If you don't have a bottomless budget, don’t worry - you'll find a great selection of spectacular Amalfi hotels that are well within your price range. Crystal-clear infinity pools stretch out into the sea, while trained fingers massage smooth oils into the backs of spa guests at the many mid-range hotels, which nuzzle against the town's surrounding cliffs. Cheaper options are available in Amalfi itself, and these usually provide a comfy bed, flatscreen television and stable WiFi connection as a minimum.

Where to stay

Amalfi is the jewel of the craggy coast it lends its name to, and you can choose to stay in the city itself, or one of the more peaceful hotels that have sprouted from the cliffs around it. Stay close to the town and you'll find roadside stalls packed with glowing yellow lemons as you explore. The best way to sample the juicy local produce is to try a shot of tongue-tantalizing limoncello liquor, which many restaurants provide for free to round off meals in the town center. If you want to enjoy a quieter, lengthier stretch of beach, try the town of Maiori - its tranquil crescent of sand is the Amalfi Coast's longest.

How to get to Amalfi

Naples Airport is the easiest to fly to, although the smaller Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport is a little closer. You can hire a car from Naples Airport and drive over – with Mount Vesuvius looming in your rearview mirror - in around 1 hour 15 minutes. If you're already in Italy, consider taking the train to Salerno. The 25 kilometer road that snakes its way from the town to Amalfi is one of Europe's most jaw-dropping coastal drives.
