Nairobi Hotels

There aren't many places where you can watch giraffes roaming freely in a national park, back dropped by a glaze of skyscrapers and urban activity - but then again, the 'Safari Capital of the World' is no ordinary city. The planet's most magnificent animals are the main draw here, but Nairobi's also revered for its pounding nightlife, which rattles walls in the city center until the early hours. Whether you're just passing through Nairobi on your way to a life changing safari experience, or here to stay for a while, you'll quickly discover your wild side in this lively city.

Things to see

Nature's life and death battle is constantly raging on your doorstep in Nairobi, and you can begin spotting leopards, stalking lions, and hearing the squeaky trumpeting of baby elephants just 20 minutes after leaving your hotel room. Nairobi National Park borders the city - but you're also within easy reach of one of nature's ultimate spectacles - The Great Migration. Each year around 2 million zebras and wildebeest embark on a perilous 500-mile journey from Tanzania to Maasai Mara National Reserve, and you can have a front row seat for this titanic game of cat and mouse. Watch as packs of wildebeest stampede across roaring rivers, while lions, cheetahs and crocodiles lick their lips hungrily on the banks, waiting for slipups. For something a little more sedate, spend a quiet afternoon at the Karen Blixen Museum, which offers fans of her book - and Academy Award winning film - 'Out of Africa,' a chance to tour the house she lived in. Don't worry if you're unfamiliar with her story – you'll still relish the chance to taste soft salmon, coated with lemon butter sauce, at the museum's delightful café. You'll eat surrounded by rainbow-splashed gardens, and trickling water features.

Hotels in Nairobi

You'll really appreciate the comforts a luxury Nairobi hotel provides after an adventure out in the wild. Work out in an air-conditioned gym, before soothing your muscles by sharing a drink in a frothing hot tub. Afterwards, sink into your 5-star hotel's Egyptian cotton sheets. Satellite television, WiFi, and in-room refrigerators are available in most of the city's mid-range hotels, so you'll always be comfortable and in touch with home. To throw yourself into the heart of the safari experience, try staying in some of the elegant tented accommodation available in Nairobi National Park. Sit under the twinkling stars and swap stories about big game encounters, before retreating to your grand double bed.

Where to stay

The city center offers some of Nairobi's best hotels, and nightclubs – which pulse with bass until the sun rises. Those heading out on safari bright and early might prefer a quieter evening at a local restaurant, however, where barbequed goat - coated in hot Maasai spices – is on the menu. If you'd rather avoid staying in the city center, book into a hotel near Langata's Giraffe Centre to guarantee a hands-on animal experience, and feel the animals' long tongues tickling your palms as you feed them. The hotels in this area also put you within easy reach of both the national park's adventures and downtown.

How to get to Nairobi

One of North Africa's largest airports is located in Nairobi, meaning almost all visitors to Kenya pass through the city. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport sits to the South East and, depending on traffic, downtown is around 20 minutes' drive away. Car rental is widely available, but many visitors choose to travel by taxi, as the city's driving can be a little intimidating. While it's generally considered safe to walk in the city center, its best to avoid most other areas on foot.
