Exploring Panama City Beach

Sitting along Florida’s Emerald Coast, Panama City Beach is a beautiful city that has been a popular tourist destination for years. Many of its visitors are from the USA, though its miles of white sandy beaches, state parks and waterfront hotels make it appealing to visitors from all over the world. Before the city became a tourist destination it was a place where pirates would wait for merchant ships heading to Mexico or Spain. It later became the site of a military reservation, and cannon platforms can still be spotted here today.

Panama City Beach is often pegged as ‘The Spring Break Capital of the World’, as over 500,000 students arrive to enjoy the beachfront city during March and April. Throughout the rest of the year it is popular among families and there are a few all-inclusive hotels that cater to this, such as Holiday Inn Club Vacations at Bay Point Resort and Marriott's Legends Edge at Bay Point. It is a great place to soak up the sun, play in the sea, breathe in the fresh air and shop.

Saint Andrews State Park
This popular state park sits just east of the city and is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico, the Grand Lagoon and Saint Andrews Bay. It is famous for its pristine beaches, walking trails and sand dunes and is a great place to spend a day. The Saint Andrews State Park sits on a former military reserve and is a haven for water sports enthusiasts, offering scuba diving, snorkelling, canoeing and kayaking. It has a campground on site that faces the Grand Lagoon, though the Wyndham Bay Point Resort Panama City Beach is less than one mile away.

Shipwreck Island Waterpark
The 20-acre Shipwreck Island Waterpark is a thrilling water park that is fun for the whole family. It features a wave pool, a massive 750-gallon tipping bucket, a slow moving river and numerous types of water slides. There is also a children’s area for the young ones complete with small slides, a wading pool and a rope climb. In addition to all of the rides and pools it also houses a souvenir shop and food stands. The park opened in 1983 and is open from April to September. It is centrally located, close to the Grand Panama Beach Resort.

Camp Helen State Park
Panama City Beach’s newest state park, the Camp Helen State Park is a historical park that sits at the west end of the city. It is a small park with much to offer, including hiking, boating and picnicking. The park also has both freshwater and saltwater fishing. The 180-acre park used to be a resort for employees of a textile mill, but since 1988 it has been open to the public.

Those looking to do a little shopping can do so at one of the city’s malls or at the more unique Panama City Flea Market.
