Exploring Miami International Airport (MIA)

Sitting eight miles northwest of central Miami, Miami International Airport is the primary airport serving the South Florida Metropolitan area, which includes Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Boca Raton. It is also a major gateway between the USA and Latin America and is one of the country’s largest air hubs. The air hub handles over 40 million passengers per year who arrive from destinations all over the world as well as from other airports throughout the USA.

When the airport opened in the 1930s it consisted of just one hangar. In 1959 a modern terminal was built which is still present today, although it has been greatly expanded. The terminal is a semicircular shape with six concourses and there are four runways, covering a total of 3,300 acres. The first level of the passenger terminal houses the baggage carousels and ground transportation, while the second level is where the shops, restaurants and check-in counters are found. Level three is home to customs and immigration.
